We constantly try to stay up to date with the latest on social media to give valuable advice to our clients. Something that has caught our eyes lately is the appearance of the so-called “vertical videos” on Youtube. What is that and what does it have to do with social media you ask?
A “vertical video” is exactly what the name indicates: a video that has a vertical or portrait orientation instead of the classic horizontal or landscape videos you usually see on Youtube and most social media platforms.
Now what is the possible benefit or use of such a video? You might think it looks silly when you watch the video on your computer with basically only video playing in the middle of your screen and the sides being plain black. But it’s when you watch the video on your smartphone (or tablet) when the advantage of this comes to surface. Even when you don’t watch it on fullscreen, you will see it bigger than you would if you watch a horizontal video. And when you put it to fullscreen, you won’t have to rotate your phone to be able to watch it, it just fills your screen as is.
In that way these videos are clearly more aimed at people who spend a lot of time on social media on their phone. We’re not sure if this is going to become a thing that all artists will do with their music videos, but it’s an interesting concept to keep an eye on still. But for now it’s maybe not a bad plan when you want to try using a “vertical video”, that you still offer the same one in the standard orientation.
